| Introduction |
|
Owned by New World Developments, Palm Island Resort opened for play
in 1999. Comprising three separate nines, the course is justifiably
popular with golfers from Hong Kong because of its relaxed feel and
superb facilties.
The easiest
way to get there from Hong Kong is by using the club's shuttle.
Morning departures leave from Queen's Pier in Central, Kowloon MTR
Station, Fanling KCR Station and the San Tin Yellow Bus Station.
Another shuttle departs from Huanggang twice a day. From Central
the journey will take 2 hours and cost HK$60 each way. From Huanggang
the journey will take 1 hour and cost HK$50 each way. Latest: The
club now uses 7-seater cars which means that you can drive through
the Lok Ma Chau crossing without having to get out. You still need
to get out at Huanggang. This is hugely convenient; after all who
enjoys lugging their clubs through immigration?

Facilities & Service |
|
The resort
has all the facilities you could possibly want. Excellent accommodation,
two swimming pools (inc. indoor), ladies only spa, tennis, even
an astronomy tower. The main restaurant serves perfectly adequate
food and there is also a small bar. There are two golf clubhouses
- one for members and one for visitors. On past experience the service
of the staff has been excellent. The club's driving range is one
of the best in China. Unlike most in the region it is an all turf
affair and there is also a short game area and a decent practice
green. There has always been a question mark over the quality of
the visitor locker rooms however. They are basic and not in-keeping
with the rest of the resort.

| Maintenance
Of Fairways & Greens |
|
Generally
speaking, the condition of all three nines is usually very good. The
greens are built to USGA specification and Palm Island Resort is also
one of the only courses in the region to permit carts on the fairways. |

The Lake/River combination of courses in undoubtedly the most difficult
of the three. Water comes into play on 13 of the 18 holes and the
hazards are very much in play. Even low-handicappers might feel a
little intimidated with so much water around. Having said all that,
the course is not that long from the blue tees and the greens are
generally quite flat.
The Lychee
9 is a bit wider than the other two and although it's not a walk
in the park, it is generally considered an easier test. The 9th
hole, however, is one of the more difficut at the resort. From the
blues the holes measures almost 400 yards and water comes into play
on both the drive and the approach. An excellent way to finish.

A feature of
all three courses is the use of large sandy waste areas just off
the fairways. These are not strictly bunkers (so you can ground
your club) but can prove tricky if you're unlucky enough to find
yourself in one.
All three
courses are also devoid of any major change in undulation making
walking around the layout a perfectly viable option in the winter
months. However, visitors are not permitted to walk at anytime and
guests are allowed to walk during the week only.
A quick note
about the designer. This is not a Jack Nicklaus course - it was
designed by his son, Jack Jr. However, this doesn't make it any
easier - overall, it's an excellent test.

| Caddy's
Service & Knowledge of the Course |
|
Like any club, it really depends how lucky you are. Bit of a mixed
bag: had some great caddies and some poor caddies. Overall, they're
a bit better than average and their English is generally better than
most other clubs. |

Average or novice golfers take note. If you want to have a decent
round without losing your life savings on golf balls, play the Lychee
course and either the Lake or River. Together, the Lake/River combination
is tough and really only suited for straight hitters of the ball.
Off the course Palm Island is superb. The facilties must rank up there
with the best of them in the region and the accommodation makes staying
the night well worth it. It's the perfect place to come with your
family or partner.
The nearest town, Huiyang, is around a 10-minute taxi ride away and
is home to a significant expatriate community. In actual fact, the
Shell oil company owns a number of the properties at the resort including
an International School. For evening entertainment try the Island
Bar in town - ask club reception for details.
