Introduction

With the opening of the Norman Course, Mission Hills Golf Club is officially the largest golf club in the world with 10 courses (180 holes). Not bad considering the place has only been open for 10 years.

The club actually occupies three different sites. The main clubhouse (named the Shenzhen clubhouse) is situated in Guanlan town and this is where the World Cup course, the Ozaki, the Vijay and the Els course are located. The Faldo course is situated outside the complex and is a 15 minute shuttle bus trip from the clubhouse. The five 'new' courses namely the Norman, the Annika, the Leadbetter, the Duval and the Olazabal are located in Dapingzhan Forest Park, Dongguan - about a 20-25 minute shuttle bus trip from the clubhouse. (A clubhouse for these new courses is currently under construction but they do have a perfectly adequate temporary facility).

In fairness Mission Hills is much more than a golf club. It has 2 luxury hotels, a plethora of restaurants, 50 tennis courts, a spa, conference rooms, top-end real estate, the list goes on and on. It is essentially a small town in its own right - it's certainly Guanlan's biggest employer by a considerable margin.

From a purely golfing standpoint the choice is obviously outstanding but despite this the club does receive its fair share of criticism. Many claim that the club is just a 'golfing factory' and doesn't have the atmosphere that a 'proper club' should. Others object that the club, in pursuit of the record number of courses title, has overlooked the important issues - course maintenance and the treatment of members being the more popular topics of debate. What is certain, however, is that no other club in the world offers the number of courses that MH does and a result it can justifiably claim to be one of Asia's foremost golfing destinations.

007's Rating (An Eventful Trip)
007 and 3 other friends decided to get to the club from Lo Wu by taxi since the shuttle bus there would cost HK$200 (50 about each).  110 RMB was the agreed fare from Lo Wu to the club by expressway, however, the driver of the cab, for some reason took a detour and was heading a longer route.

My friend immediately demanded the driver to go back up the expressway or would deduct the cost of the expressway toll of $20 dollars! But he refused and kept going and since they were communicating in Mandarin, 007 had not much idea what they were on about. All I knew was they were screaming at each other for almost 20 minutes and then all of a sudden both stop dead.  Shit, a fight is looming ..... I have come to play golf and a punch up is about to erupt.

On one hand, its only $20 dollars, what's the point? Especially when the damn driver had his hands on the steering wheel going at 80 km. On the other, I thought my mate had a point .....we can't let him get away with it..... what should we do?

The reminder of the trip went in complete silence, and as soon as we arrived (missing our tee time by 15 minutes), my mate got off and fished out his $80 and gave to the driver... when realized he didn't get his 110 bucks, he went completely berserk and started to scream and push my mate around. Well, 007 is not about to stand around and let him do that and was about to intercept and gave him one of my Kung Fu kicks despite that fact that I might wound him seriously and put him out work for days but enough is enough!

Readers might want to know why I am relating this incident*, but please bear with me.

As I was saying, I was about to deal with the driver when two young security guards from the club came out of nowhere and managed to 'secure' the driver within seconds. Once they realized what happened they quickly returned the guy to his taxi and 'sent him packing'.

007 was most impressed by the speedy response from the security guards and equally happy with the staff of the club who quickly managed to put us on the next available tee time. Ace.

* This is the only problem I had since my travelling in China so don't be put off.
