Southern Wood, which is located on the opposite side of Xiamen island, was the second golfing stop of my trip. You have to take a 20 minute ferry ruide and then a 10 minute shuttle bus journey to get there. The 18-hole course is owned by a Taiwanese group. Unfortunately, the current clubhouse is really very poor and the service was not good. Fortunately, a massive new clubhouse is set to open in early 2008. Hopefully the facilities and service will have improved vastly by then.

he course is generally flat, with several of the holes overlooking a beautiful beach; the views from here are excellent. As far as the actual course goes, it it doesn't look too demanding - especially on the front nine - because of its generous
fairways. However, this is one long course: From the blue tee it measures an outrageous 7,234 yards! Even from the white it's long: 6,827 yards!( scorecard )And because of its monstrouslength, low scoring is hard to come by. The back nine features water on many of the holes and dense trees, flanking the fairways, are also in play. Like Xiamen Orient, Southern Wood gets windy because of its seaside location, which, as you can expect, makes things much tougher.

Well, I was disappointed with the club's maintenance practice - did they have to put sand on every single hole?
And why so much sand? Surely, they can do few holes or even 9 holes at a time, right? I like the course design and I love the view from the course. But the standard of service has to be improved...and quick. As said, I hope everything will have been improved when the new clubhouse opens......par11/07

One final word, be more careful when you board the ferry, when the tide goes out, you need to do this.
