Golf007 Amateur Championship Tour: 6th Round
Longgang Public Golf Course, 20 July
The sixth round of the Golf 007 Amateur Championship Tour took place at the Longgang Public Golf Course on 20 July. It was the first time the Tour had visited Longgang, which is only an hour’s drive from centre of Shenzhen. Due to the limited tee times available at this busy course, only 40 players could participate. However, those who were able to make it were rewarded with a round over the beautiful A & B layouts here (Longgang has a third nine too: the C Course).
The results were, on the whole, surprisingly high, due to the A course’s notoriously tight fairways and undulating greens. Despite being relatively short (only 3,113 yards), the course presented problems at every turn, including a few disasters for even the Tour’s most steady and consistent players.
In the Men’s Gross Division, only Law Chi Ming was able to navigate his way around the twisting layout without too much bother; his solid 80 proving good enough to claim first place. The result put Law at the top of the Order of Merit ranking. Pre-event favourite Ivan Leung, who won the last event, had to settle for third place on the leaderboard.
Matthew Cheng also coped with the tough course admirably, his score seeing him clinch first place in the Men’s Nett Division. The win also boosted Cheng into eighth place on the Order of Merit. David Wan continues his lead at the top of the rankings. Long hitter Edgar Payos won the Long Drive contest, while Ian Wong’s beautiful iron shot netted him the Nearest the Pin award.
The Ladies’ Nett Division winner was Ms. Ada Lee, who carded a brilliant 3-under-par 69, while Ms. Joyce Yip not only showed her usual steady form with a respectable score of 87 to win the Gross Division but also out drove pre-event favorite Evita at the long drive contest. Cynthia Lee’s great approach won her the Nearest the Pin contest for the second event in a row.
